چکیده

Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have been identified as one of the relevant use cases where the emerging paradigm of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) will likely be beneficial. In fact, virtualization fosters flexibility, since on-demand resource allocation of virtual CDN nodes can accommodate sudden traffic demand changes. However, there are cases where physical appliances should still be preferred, therefore we envision a mixed architecture in between these two solutions, capable to exploit the advantages of both of them. Motivated by these reasons, in this paper we formulate a two-stage stochastic planning model that can be used by CDN operators to compute the optimal long-term network planning decision, deploying physical CDN appliances in the network and/or leasing resources for virtual CDN nodes in data centers. Key findings demonstrate that for a large range of pricing options and traffic profiles, NFV can significantly save network costs spent by the operator to provide the content distribution service.

Optimal design of cross docking supply chain networks with time-varying uncertain demands

This paper proposes an integrated network design model for a post-distribution cross-docking strategy, comprising multi product production facilities with shared production resources, capacitated cross docks with setup cost and customer zones with time windows constraints. The model is dynamic in terms of time-varying uncertain demands, whereas uncertainty is expressed with scenario approach an...

Managing Traffic Demand Uncertainty in Replica Server Placement with Robust Optimization

The replica server placement problem determines the optimal location where replicated servers should be placed in content distribution networks, in order to optimize network performance. The estimated traffic demand is fundamental input to this problem and its accuracy is essential for the target performance to be achieved. However, deriving accurate traffic demands is far from trivial and unce...

Internet Traffic Engineering for Partially Uncertain Demands

One of the weaknesses in conventional routing management is that it bases on given and often ”worst case” traffic matrices. Imprecision in a single element of the traffic matrix could result in inefficient routing decisions and unpredictable performance forecast errors. As the number of communication endpoints and diverse applications grows increasingly, the task to accurately forecast demands ...

Communication-Aware Traffic Stream Optimization for Virtual Machine Placement in Cloud Datacenters with VL2 Topology

By pervasiveness of cloud computing, a colossal amount of applications from gigantic organizations increasingly tend to rely on cloud services. These demands caused a great number of applications in form of couple of virtual machines (VMs) requests to be executed on data centers’ servers. Some of applications are as big as not possible to be processed upon a single VM. Also, there exists severa...

Priority-Based Content Delivery in the Internet of Vehicles through Named Data Networking

Named Data Networking (NDN) has been recently proposed as a prominent solution for content delivery in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), where cars equipped with a variety of wireless communication technologies exchange information aimed to support safety, traffic efficiency, monitoring and infotainment applications. The main NDN tenets, i.e., name-based communication and in-network caching, perf...
